FEDERALBUDGET.COM
This site explains:
- How big our Federal budget is
- How much our annual budget deficit is - currently approaching $1.2 Trillion
- How much our Government owes - it's over $10.2 Trillion Dollars
The best thing we can ultimately do is stop spending more money than we take in. Yet, our Government does it every year. In the past 38 years, we've only had a budget surplus for four years. This is important because if a company kept losing money, and spending more than they make, they would have to file for bankruptcy. How long can we keep this up?
That's why it's important for the U.S. Government to encourage people and businesses to do the spending. That's what makes the economy grow the fastest.
PUBLICAGENDA.ORG
Public Agenda tracks the federal budget deficit and national spending. The aging population in this country and unfunded entitlement programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will cause continued strain on the economy. They predict that by 2040, there will be no money for anything but Social Security, Medicare and interest on the National Debt.
NATIONAL DEBT CLOCK
If you really want to upset your stomach, you can look at the National Debt Clock - and how much your family's share of this is.
The actual clock is on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, and was built by realtor Sidney Durst in 1989. Back then, when the national debt was about three trillion dollars, he never envisioned the possibility that it could rise to over 10 trillion dollars. As a result, last year, the dollar sign to the left of the digital display had to be removed to allow for an extra electronic digit.
According to the Associated Press, preparations are under way for a new clock that would allow for quadrillions - 16 zeroes.
